TRANSCRIPTION

The 3/4 began. <The chimes rang, clear and blended across the [darker and the bitter elms?] better the clean flame One by one the
notes rang, slow and clear, in the mind creating [ahead?] the <blended [chime?] <<yet>> not yet reached> formal pattern <[illegible] what
the <<unhur>> <<[illegible]>> unhurrying before the notes> [illegible] without haste by fine [illegible]
away just a lot of [upright?] [illegible] in a region without light remembering not the beast with two backs not remem-
bering knowing or not knowing but with the clean flame between and not sunlight where the beast the Beast
never to be [illegible] again not [even?] not honeysuckle ebb fluxuant with [illegible] [decaying?] with the sawdust [illegible] from what
wound in what side that not for me died not.

Then the last note. It stopped vibrating after a while, and the darkness was still again about the bitter elms and beyond
them <the water in the darkness, peaceful and swift. I put on my coat and carried the watch into Shreve's room and
laid it on the dresser and picked up his letter from the table and snapped the light off and opened the door and
the sound of the car dying away and the [illegible] road and then the bridge and the water beneath in the darkness
powerful and swift. <I> going on into the darkness and the silence and the bridge [arching?] out of the silence and> the
water <beneath> in the darkness, peaceful and swift. I put on my coat and hat
[margin: [illegible] Shreve's letter [illegible] the coat <and took it out and [illegible] in my hand]
and carried the watch into Shreve's room and
laid it on his dresser and

took up his letter
and put it in my outside coat pocket
from the table and snapped the light off and
[margin: then I remembered I hadn't brushed my teeth. I turned the light on and opened the bag again and
found my toothbrush and went into Shreve's room and got some paste and went and brushed my teeth.
I squeezed <[illegible] the brush as dry as I could and put it back in the bag and shut it and went to the door and put
my hand on the light switch. Only I couldn't remember anything else and when it was still <I could feel the water> the water began
again [illegible] and I opened
