Biography:
Ab Snopes, Flem's father in a number of Yoknapatawpha fictions, is an elusive figure in The Town. In Chapter 1 Charles reports him as having been hanged during the Civil War as a horse thief - right before Ratliff tells Gavin Stevens that "about ten years ago Flem and an old man who seemed to be his father appeared suddenly from nowhere one day and rented a little farm from Mr Will Varner" (5). (Ab may appear again in Chapter 8, as the irascible old man who lived just outside of Jefferson with a watermelon patch that he fiercely guarded: some folks say he "Mr Flem's father" but others identify him as "just his uncle" (136). However, we have decided to identify this angry old man as a brother of Ab.)

In The Town, Faulkner plays with the idea that this oldest Snopes has only legendary connections to the Ab Snopes of The Unvanquished novel and stories. JBC
