Although the italicized passage pages 148-150 begins with the word "thinking," and seems to refer to Quentin's thoughts, at this point Quentin interjects a comment that makes it seem as if the recapitulation of the story, which resumes and continues to page 152, is in fact Shreve talking. (The references to Sutpen as "the demon" reinforce the suggestion that the entire passage is from Shreve (150, etc.).
