While Sutpen is away at the War, the blacks on the plantation mock Jones for not serving; he sees his role as taking care of Sutpen's home and family. To defend himself against the "jeering echoes" of the Negroes' laughter, he remembers being with Sutpen and conjures up a vision of him as a godlike figure of a man (226).
