Biography:
Bayard Sartoris is the narrator of "Vendee," though as in the other seven stories that he narrates, he is telling the story some years later. At the time of this story, Bayard is seeking vengeance for the murder of his grandmother Rosa Millard by Grumby and his gang of outlaws. Earlier he has taken a shot at a Yankee - with comic effect. Here, although his inexperience remains on display, the seriousness of his quest and the violence of its outcome feel like a step in his growth toward manhood. According to Uncle Buck, Bayard's violent actions to avenge the family definitely prove that he is "John Sartoris' boy" (117).
