Summary:
"Beyond" begins with Doc Peabody listening to the final beats of Judge Allison's heart. The Judge's dying thought is that at least he is spared "the uproar of female connections which might have been my lot" (781); Chlory's wailing will soon prove him wrong. Then Allison dies, but he doesn't seem to recognize the transition.
