Description:

Since we have to create a location for the place from which the narrator is writing or telling the story, we have chosen "Chicago." The narrator identifies himself as an "American" in the opening sentences (407), and not from the South, based on what he says about Bland: "He was a Southerner, too, like Sartoris" - but not, apparently, like him (408). Beyond that we cannot say where he is from, nor does the story give any clue about where he is living in the present, twelve years after the end of the War; it could be anywhere in the U.S. or indeed in Europe. "Chicago" in this case is meant simply to give us a place on a map, that is as probable as any other place for this unidentified American to have landed.
