Summary:

Old Carothers buys a slave woman named Eunice in New Orleans for $650, more than double what Buck and Buddy paid for Brownlee fifty years later (see 250). (Later in the section the narrator says Old Carothers "travelled three hundred miles and better to New Orleans," making it clear that he had already moved to Mississippi from Carolina by that early date, 257). Eunice is married in 1809 to Thucydus, one of the slaves Old Carothers brought with him from Carolina. She drowns on "Cristmas Day" in 1832 (253). The entry refers to Old Carothers as "Father," indicating that it was made by Buck, probably at the time Eunice died.
