Summary:
The narrator takes over the story of the South in the aftermath of the Civil War, though it seems clear that the third-person narrative of "the dark corrupt and bloody time" of Reconstruction is meant to represent Ike's opinion as well as some kind of historical truth (275). The version of Reconstruction provided includes the "rapine and pillage" perpetrated by the carpetbaggers and other outsiders, the acts of terror committed against the emancipated slaves by the "lynching mobs . . . armed in sheets and masks," and the promotion to positions of political power of incompetent blacks like "Sickymo" (276-77).
