Summary:
When the discussion between Ike and his cousin about the Negro race leads to Ike's saying that "we" - Southern whites - "have never been free" (280), he abruptly remembers what happened in the woods "that summer twilight seven years ago" (281), when he rescued his fyce dog from underneath a rearing Old Ben. This leads him to think more generally about Sam Fathers' life, as a mixed race man, and his own apprenticeship to same as a hunter.
