There is an unresolvable contradiction in dates here. Text makes it clear that McCarron and Eula have sex in "the third summer" (p146). "Summer" could start as early as June 1, but not earlier; the discovery is made that Eula is pregnant "three months later" (p155) than than they have sex, which takes us to September. But at start of Book Two, it's "third week in September" (177) and yet Ratliff says it's been "29 days" (179) since Eula's marriage to Flem, which carries us back to August 16-23, but "three months" before that would carry us back to May 16-23, more or less, i.e. spring, not summer. We have chosen to rely on narrative's references rather than Ratliff's.
