CUT 8-12-2017 when SR broke the passage up into smaller sections: Faulkner presents a short narrative history of the land, from the Chickasaw Indians who "owned it" to their removal for the plantation system which went extinct after the Civil War. Through this now "forgotten" landscape, Ike runs, finding the "wall" of smoke and running into to it in order to save the cow (190). Here, Ike is confronted by a panicked horse until the horse gallops straight at him and the cow and the three of them tumble down the hill. The horse immediately gallops away and, with repeated effort, the pair escape the ditch, the cow moving first along the ravine to the creek and Ike following her.

Summary:

The narrative provides a very brief outline of the history of the land that is now the pasture where Houston's cow grazes. This history begins with the "Chickasaw Indians" (190).
