Summary: 

Mink walks to the well to wash himself and his wife joins him, reproaching him for the murder of Houston and his lack of regard for the welfare of his family. Mink repeatedly strikes his wife who eventually retreats into the cabin. The children observe their mother's bloody face, as Mrs. Snopes retrieves "four snuff tins" and takes the children, leaving Mink alone on the farm (246).
