Summary:

Mrs. Armstid asks Flem for the five dollars Buck Hipps promised her two days earlier. Flem, however, claims that the Texan took all the money with him. As she turns to go, Flem stops her and goes into the store. Jody Varner arrives and another man in a wagon drives by, greeting the men on the porch. When Flem returns, he gives Mrs. Armstid a bag of candy and a five-cent piece. As she leaves, Lump laughs at Flem's cunning, and Jody suddenly rushes into the store to stop Saint Elmo who is eating the candy within the case inside. He grabs the boy and warns Lump who tells Saint Elmo to go home. Ratliff asks Jody who the boy is and discovers to his surprise that he is the son of I.O. Snopes. Jody then asks Eck about how he caught his horse.
