Summary:
Darl remembers the morning that Jewel appears at home riding one of the spotted horses. Now the family learns that his sleepiness was caused by the nightly work he did in Quick's field to earn the horse. Anse feels cheated by his son's action, but Addie is moved to cry hard all day. And from that, Darl says, "I knew that I knew" - i.e. he becomes aware of his mother's affair and Jewel's illegitimacy.
