Summary:
Gavin tells Linda she does not have to go away. He speculates first that it was Flem who took Linda's Communist membership card as a way to threaten her and then that he wrote the obscenities on the pavement in order to justify eventually sending his daughter to an asylum. He and Linda agree that they are "the only two people in the world that love each other and don't have to" have sex to demonstrate that (267).
