Summary:
As Devries is returning from his second tour of duty, "the story comes out" about his final act of heroism: when his unit has been trapped, he and "a Negro sergeant" rescue them and allow the troops to retreat by "holding off one attack single[sic]-handed"; when they are wounded, they in turn are rescued by "a hulking giant of an Arkansas Negro cotton-field hand" to whom Devries gave his second medal (339).
