The Mansion, 369 (Event)

One morning, about a year after Meadowfill had been sitting in his wheelchair, a hog actually did come across his lot. [Note: The dating of this event is not without contradiction. As the textual note indicates, The Mansion is notorious for its inconsistencies with the other part of the Snopes trilogy. Faulkner and Erskine were never able to fully iron out all of the problems with the dating. It appears that with the reworking of "Hog Pawn" Faulkner has not considered the dates he mentioned earlier in this chapter. He makes clear that Meadowfilll had been waiting for over a year to see a hog. Yet, by the dating of the text he has been sitting there for 3 years at least. Res arrives and builds his lot in 1943 or two years before Clarence is expelled from office. Meadowfill gets the wheelchair in 1943, one year after Essie's graduation in 1942. Charles Mallison returns in September 1945 and the building of the arterial highway in 1946. There is therefore no way way that Meadowfill could have been sitting in his wheelchair for only one year, unless he got the wheelchair in 1943 and started sitting in it waiting for a hog only two years later. Needless to say, this internal contradiction only affects the chronological, but not the logical order of events. As such, the overriding total order has been used to establish the chronology and dating.]
