Biography:
Nicknamed "Swamp Fox," Colonel Francis Marion became famous as a guerilla fighter against the British during the American Revolution. Like Colonel Sartoris, he led a small troop of men that harassed the British forces; this is the long campaign that Backhouse refers to when he says his grandfather was "with Marion all through Carolina" (682).
