McCaslin-Edmonds Place in The Unvanquished (Location)
The focus of much of the novel Go Down, Moses, the McCaslin place in The Unvanquished is owned by twin brothers Amodeus and Theophilus McCaslin (Uncle Buck and Uncle Buddy). It is a "big bottom-land plantation about fifteen miles from town" it has "a big colonial house on it which their father had built and which people said was still one of the finest houses in the country when they inherited it" (46-47). When their father died sometime before the Civil War, however, Buck and Buddy built themselves a "two-room log house" on the plantation, and moved all their slaves "in the manor house." As the residence of those slaves, the house "didn't have any windows now" (47) - but the slaves and the McCaslins respected the arrangement: the slaves agreed not to sneak out where their owners could see them, and their owners agreed not watch the back door.
