Description:

Founded in 1819, Memphis, Tennessee, is the closest big city to Yoknapatawpha County, and it plays a role in many of Faulkner's novels and stories. Memphis is most frequently associated with the kinds of misbehavior and vice that are unavailable in Yoknapatawpha. It appears in this story as the place where a Yoknapatawpha man, Boyd Ballenbaugh, gets involved in several urban activities that imply violence and lawlessness: he is an "armed guard" during a textile strike, and then, with a set of "associates" from whom he later has to hide, in some kind of "business" that would attract the attention of "the police" (76).
