A "placid mountain of a woman," I.O. Snopes' wife spends her days in the porch swing of their "small frame house" - "not doing anything: just swinging" (235). (In the later novel The Town Faulkner makes I.O. a bigamist; the evidence of the later texts suggests that the Mrs. I.O. Snopes in this first Yoknapatawpha novel is the woman he marries second.)
Note:
In Town readers learn that I.O. is a bigamist, and that it is the Frenchman's Bend girl he married second who is Clarence's mother, but we can't say with any confidence if that's the wife in this novel, or even if Faulkner has thought about giving I.O. two wives yet. But in Town, also, it's I.O.'s first wife who takes over Snopes Hotel in Jefferson. Another Snopes mystery...
