New Orleans, Louisiana in "Knight's Gambit" (Location)
New Orleans, Louisiana, is where Mr. Harriss is from and where he and Mrs. Harriss go on their honeymoon, "as everyone in that country at that time did who considered his marriage legal" (155). It is rumored that he is a bootlegger who smuggles "whiskey up from the Gulf to New Orleans" (162). He also imports a butler and friends from New Orleans with him to the plantation in Yoknapatawpha; these newcomers bring with them the air of money and urban sophistication combined with an aura of criminality that implies the distinction between the cosmopolitan city and the rural South: "the men and the women with a hard, sleek, expensive unmarried air and look about them even when now and then some of them really were married to each other perhaps: the strange outlanders driving big shining sports cars fast through town and fast along the road which was still just a country road" (163). It is where Harriss is rumored to have "died at [his] desk" as well (167).
