Summary:
The Indians who live in Mississippi are "astonished" to see the first white men arrive - "three French men" in "a Chippeway canoe" (81). Though the novel provides no further details about this event, our dating of it is based on the historical voyage of the French explorer La Salle down the Mississippi River to its mouth (though La Salle's party had more than three Frenchmen in it).
