Rosa Millard
In this fourth Unvanquished tale, Rosa Millard - the mother-in-law of Col. John Sartoris and the grandmother of Bayard Sartoris - continues amid the hardships brought on by the Civil War to take care of her family, her slaves and the Sartoris plantation, but the story focuses on her campaign to also help the larger community of Yoknapatawpha, especially the poor of both races. It's a non-military campaign against the Union army that has occupied Mississippi: with the help of Ringo (a family slave), Ab (a Snopes), and her own grandson, she tricks various Yankee units into providing her with mules which they can then sell back to other Yankee units for money which she dispenses to the local community. After the Yankees move away, she decides to try something similar on a vicious renegade named Grumby and his gang of outlaws; despite her faith in the chivalric code - "They won't hurt a woman," she tells Bayard and Ringo (95) - they murder her.
