Dilsey, Luster, Benjy, and Frony walk to church. They pass white churchgoers and Frony tells Dilsey "Folks talkin'" about Dilsey bringing Benjy to her church. They continue on the street until after it becomes a dirt road and join unnamed members of Dilsey's church. Many greet Dilsey as she passes. Frony speaks for Dilsey most of the time, explaining she isn't feeling well this morning. Some of the children talk about Benjy as "a looney" and dare each other to touch him.
Summary:
After passing "along the street" where they see "white people" going to their churches, Dilsey, Luster, Benjy, and Frony walk down "a dirt road" through the black section of Jefferson to get to their church (290).
