This character represents the "ancestors" of Gavin Stevens (444). All the novel says about them is that they "owned slaves" in Jefferson (444), but the later short story "Hand Upon the Waters" (1939) identifies a "Stevens" as one of the first three white men to settle in what became Jefferson.
