Summary:
Charles Mallison sums up his Uncle Gavin's actions and thoughts during the time he spends in Europe: he spends "two years" as a Ph.D. student at Heidelberg (110). After World War I begins, he plans to become "a stretcher-bearer wtih the German army," but Germany's actions during the early War convince him instead to volunteer to assist the French army as part of the American Field Service, a relatively new organization (111). He spent five months near the front at Verdun and contracted pneumonia; after convalescing, he returned home to wait for America's entry into the war.
