Summary:
In a long conversation with Eula, Gavin reviews Flem's rise toward respectability. Gavin is shocked to learn that Flem bought the house he'd been renting the day before anyone knew he was going to be the bank's new vice president. He is also surprised when Eula explains that Flem is the one who doesn't want Linda to leave Yoknapatawpha for college. When Eula tells him to marry Linda, Gavin tells her "Goodbye" (237).
