Summary:
After Gavin Stevens's spends much of Chapter 17 speculating about Flem Snopes' motivations and methods, Ratliff enters the office and says that he drove Flem to Frenchman's Bend yesterday, to take something to Mrs. Varner - not, as Gavin says, "to Will" (308). Ratliff's account calls into question much if not all of Gavin's narrative reconstruction.
