Biography:
The "passing female child" whom Benjy accosts is named Burgess in The Sound and the Fury (1929), which provides more details about Benjy's "fumbling abortive attempt" to engage with her (339). In this earlier account, Benjy's action is informed by his mourning for Caddy; the characterization of the event in the Appendix reflects Jason and the community's interpretation of Benjy's actions as lustful.
Note:
CUT: "is one of the schoolgirls Jason IV refers in passing to an event that is described more fully in The Sound and the Fury. There, schoolgirls pass by the fence at the edge of the Compson domain, and Benjy Compson follows them on the other side of the fence, seeing in them his sister Caddy, for whom he had often waited to return from school. When the fence is left open one day, Benjy seizes one of the passing girls. Although in the Benjy section of the novel,"
CUT: "The schoolgirl is simply described as "a passing female child," emphasizing her innocence and role as victim to what Jason sees as Benjy's "fumbling abortive attempt" (339)."
