Biography:
Identified in this story only as "that book-keeper in Colonel Sartoris' bank" and "the man who robbed the bank" (739, 740), Byron is one of the many cousins whom Flem Snopes brings into Jefferson from Frenchman's Bend. His miserable attempt to court the aristocratic Narcissa Benbow by writing her obscene, anonymous letters figures prominently in the narrative of Flags in the Dust. That novel also makes it clear that he is the "somebody" who broke into the Benbow house (739), where he steals the letters from Narcissa's underwear drawer (the place where she believed "nobody could ever find them," 739). Along with the money he steals the same night, the letters go with him when he disappears from Yoknapatawpha.
