Biography:

One of the men of the settlement, he is sent to the "post-office-store" to "fetch the old Carolina lock from the latest Nashville mail-pouch" (202).

Note:
But see column 1 on page 206 "In fact, no messenger had ever been sent to old Alec" (206). I still think this is a contradiction. We never hear from or about the "courier" again, which is not unreasonable, but the "messenger" is mentioned and then denied before we meet the "courier." "Messenger" is not "courier." The only mention of the "courier" occurs at the bottom of 206, column one, while the denial of the "messenger" takes place near the top on the same column. - JBC You're right that no messenger is sent to Holston's tavern to ask Holston about using his lock, but clearly someone is sent to the "post-office-store" to fetch the lock, because the lock is fetched (202). - SR
