Biography:
"These people," thinks Mr. Pearson as he arrives to serve warrants at the McCallum house (46). Pearson's work with various relief agencies has taught him to expect the worst from country people, and he assumes that they are all shiftless and untrustworthy. The encounter with the McCallum family and the story of their lives, as Gombault tells it, forces Pearson to revise his assumptions and abandon his prejudices.
Note:
The encounter with the McCallum family shows that although Pearson thought that he "knew" such people (48), he didn't understand them at all. Moreover, this encounter calls into question the other stereotypical judgments that Pearson has made about the country people he's worked with through various state agencies.
