Biography:
Will Legate is a member of the Yoknapatawpha hunting party that travels to the Delta in 1940, a son of one of Ike's "old companions, whom he had taught" the discipline of hunting (268). Legate is protective of Ike as "a man your age," but shows only a little concern when Boyd violates that code by killing a doe, and no concern at all for the "pretty light-colored" two-legged "doe" with whom Don Boyd has an affair with (268-69).
Note:
CUT: Will Legate is the grandson of one of the men in Ike’s original hunting party. He is also a member of the second hunting party Ike references. Legate sits between Don and Uncle Ike while traveling to the hunting grounds. He announces the fact that Don has a “doe” in the old hunting grounds. He describes her as “Pretty light-colored.” He hints that Don chased this “doe” last year and last January. He also believes the nation will stop Hitler or any man like Hitler. Legate is acutely aware of Ike's age. He references Ike's old age, and wants Ike to rest while the others set up camp. He also tells Isham to be quiet and let Ike sleep.
