WW1 Europe: Saint Vaast in "All the Dead Pilots" (Location)
When Major Kaye writes to tell Johnny's Aunt Jenny about the circumstances of his death in combat, he mentions that Johnny's remains are buried in a cemetery "just north of Saint Vaast," which he hopes won't be shelled again (530). There are over a dozen places in France named for Saint Vaast, a canonized sixth century French bishop. This "Saint Vaast" is most likely Neuville-St. Vaast, just west of the village of Vimy, where the Canadian army had an important victory in April 1917. This Saint Vaast is also near Arras, where the Allies had a base. We think that a soldier like Major Kaye would be more likely to refer to a battle site than a resort town or abbey (other possible namesakes) when explaining the grave's location, even to someone who had no idea what he meant.
