Summary:

This is another temporally complex passage. In 1883 Ike is reading the three ledger entries in which his uncle and his father, about six months after Eunice's death in 1832 and shortly before the birth of her daughter Tomasina's child in 1883, discuss in elliptical terms whether Eunice drowned accidentally or killed herself. In the middle of the passage Ike also recalls the way his cousin remembered his uncle many years earlier.
