In Ratliff's description of the barn burning at De Spain's, he refers to these men who are fighting the fire as "his [i.e. De Spain's] niggers" (19). That could mean they are servants, though it seems more likely that, like Ab Snopes, they are tenant farmers working other pieces of land at De Spain's.
