Summary:

Because in Faulkner's Mississippi only African American women washed clothes for money, the fact that Roth's mistress' aunt "took in washing" makes him realize her race, the "something intangible" she had brought with her into his tent (342, 340). In a blend of outrage and horror he thinks that "maybe" in another one or two thousand years "in America" interracial marriage will be possible, "But not now!" (343).
