Summary:

Labove watches Eula over a period of five years. During this time he watched her inert motionless body sit in the class while never doing any of the work. The narrator observes that, "she possessed life but not sentience" (127), and spent most of her days waiting for Jody to pick her up. At the same time, her budding sexuality transforms the classroom into a "grove of Venus" and she has the attention of "every male in the room" (127). Aloof from all this, she never participates in any activities in school even when there are the occasional parties on Friday nights.
