Summary:
In the dark, Mink passes through his corn field and into the trees beyond, following the cries of Houston's hound. He arrives at the depression in which Houston's corpse lies and, in a series of exchanges, fends the hound off. Finding the corpse, he drags it through the mud onto an old logging road.
