Summary:
Early in the morning, six men join Eck and his son at the fence to watch the ponies. They discuss the nature of Flem's involvement in the upcoming auction and his universal distrust of everyone. One man asks Eck whether Flem would cheat his family as easily as he would strangers, and Eck gives the same reply as the night earlier. Buck Hipps appears and asks Eck to help him drive the herd of ponies into the barn, and Eck warns his son to stay away from the ponies.
