Bayard is finally able to understand what Aunt Louisa is saying in her letter to Rosa Millard: after the death of her fiancé at Shiloh, Drusilla would achieve the "highest destiny" for Southern women, to be a "bride-widow of a lost cause," but she had not only "thrown that away" and become "a lost woman and a shame to her father's memory," she was now "living in a word" that Louisa would not repeat in the letter but which Rosa knew (191).
