Summary:

Bayard summarizes the developments since the election and wedding: the house has been rebuilt; Bayard's Aunt Jenny has come to live with them and planted a garden, which in turn provided Drusilla a source for verbena, the only flower, she said, whose scent could be smelled "above the smell of horses and courage," and hence "the only one that was worth the wearing" (220). Bayard also says the railroad was "hardly begun" and his father was still on good terms with his partner, Redmond, even as he borrows money to pay the railroad workers.
