Description:

In this story a "remnant" of the "once powerful" Chickasaw tribe still lives in the Yoknapatawpha in the 20th century, "under Government protection," in "their own settlement," apparently a kind of reservation that includes their own "store" (65). Historically, however, almost no federally sanctioned Chickasaws remained in the region after they were removed west of the Mississippi River in the 1830s. In addition, the story's Chickasaw culture is organized around a large Indian mound - although historically the mounds were built by an aboriginal people who inhabited the land well before the arrival of the Chickasaws.
