Biography: 

"Jackson's corps" - the Confederate force that, according to Mr. Compson, Sutpen's regiment of Yoknapatawpha soldiers served in (223) - was led by General Thomas Jackson - better known as Stonewall Jackson. It was a major force in Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. What Mr. Compson calls Jackson's "ruthless tactical skill" was demonstrated in a number of battles before his death in 1863 (223).
