Biography:
This is the mother whom Judge Allison meets in "Beyond," a young woman who wears "a plain, brushed, worn cape" with "a plain, bright, pleasant face" and "a pleasant, tranquil voice" (791). She treats her son "with an air fond and unconcerned," soothing him when he fusses and doling out toys to him (793). When she first appears she is "carrying a child" (791), but she does not provide any details about her previous existence. Ingersoll tells the judge to "Follow her" (791). Like her son with the scars, she evokes the Christ story, with which the judge has struggled his entire adult life.
Note:
TMT: I assigned Class as Lower, unconfidently, because of her "brushed, worn cape," bearing in mind all of the characters in Faulkner who are poor but still very clean and presentable. I don't know how confident one can be assigning Mary to a social class, but such is Drupal.
CUT: and then looks once at the Judge before passing on her way
