CUT: Flint (disguised as Pritchel), trembling and shaking, accuses the sheriff of letting Ellie's murderer get away and says he will use the money from the sale to hunt Flint down. He then gruffly orders everyone out of his house. Flint (disguised as Pritchel) pours whiskey for the men and asks the narrator to get the water bucket in order to mix the drinks. Flint (disguised as Pritchel) offers to have a drink with the sheriff and Gavin Stevens rather than kicking them out, and the narrator notes a softening in the demeanor of Flint/Pritchel. Sheriff Hub places "an old-fashioned cut-glass decanter and three heavy tumblers" (131) on the table. As the narrator starts for the water bucket, he notices Flint (disguised as Pritchel) reach for the sugar bowl and "plunge the spoon into the sugar" (132).
