Summary:
Ratliff notes that Ab Snopes never got closer to Jefferson than the hill two miles from town "where he taken the studs that day back about 1910" (169). We have not been able to figure out what event V.K. is referring to - Ab does swap horses and mules with Pat Stamper at Stamper's camp outside Jefferson in The Hamlet and "Fool about a Horse," but none of those animals were remotely like "studs," and in that episode Ab does get into town. (Studs can also refer to the frame of a house, but that doesn't make this reference any clearer.)
