Summary:
Will Varner curbs Clarence Snopes' delinquent behavior by getting the Justice of the Peace to deputize him a constable of Frenchman's Bend. To the surprise of many, Clarence takes his job very seriously from the first. Even his beatings of the black inhabitants change in degree, becoming "impersonal" compared to his previous racial violence (329). The parenthetical "(Ratliff said)" suggests that the narrator's account of Clarence's life is a kind of paraphrase of the version that Ratliff tells at some point, though if so, it's never made clear to whom Ratliff would be speaking (328).
